The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended Dr. Sanjay Funde, the Health Officer and Registrar of the M-East (Govandi) ward, for issuing 94 fake birth certificates to illegal immigrants, primarily of Bangladeshi origin. The suspension was initiated in early November 2025 following an internal investigation and pressure from BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. The Allegation: Dr. Funde was found to have illegally issued numerous birth certificates to foreign nationals residing in India without proper documentation.Scale of the Scam: An internal probe revealed 94 such fake certificates in the M-East ward alone. Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya alleged that more than 200 fake certificates were issued in the ward between 2024 and 2025, and that the total scam across the state could involve over a thousand fake certificates.Modus Operandi: The irregularities included showing birth registrations through non-existent hospitals, suggesting a nexus between the officials, agents, and individuals seeking the fake documents.

• Further Action: In addition to Dr. Funde's suspension, the BMC is initiating the suspension process for another health officer and two assistants. An FIR was scheduled to be registered by the Deonar Police Station on November 6, 2025, related to this instance.Wider Investigation: The Maharashtra government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the widespread delayed birth registration scam and has identified over 42,000 suspect birth certificates issued to illegal immigrants across the state.

बृहन्मुंबई नगर निगम (बीएमसी) ने एम-ईस्ट (गोवंडी) वार्ड के स्वास्थ्य अधिकारी और रजिस्ट्रार डॉ. संजय फंडे को अवैध प्रवासियों, मुख्य रूप से बांग्लादेशी मूल के, को 94 फर्जी जन्म प्रमाण पत्र जारी करने के आरोप में निलंबित कर दिया है। भाजपा नेता किरीट सोमैया के दबाव और आंतरिक जांच के बाद नवंबर 2025 की शुरुआत में निलंबन शुरू किया गया था। आरोप: डॉ. फंडे पर बिना उचित दस्तावेज के भारत में रहने वाले विदेशी नागरिकों को अवैध रूप से कई जन्म प्रमाण पत्र जारी करने का आरोप पाया गया था। घोटाले का पैमाना: एक आंतरिक जांच में अकेले एम-ईस्ट वार्ड में ऐसे 94 फर्जी प्रमाण पत्र सामने आए।  पूर्व भाजपा सांसद किरीट सोमैया ने आरोप लगाया कि 2024 और 2025 के बीच वार्ड में 200 से अधिक फर्जी प्रमाण पत्र जारी किए गए थे, और राज्य भर में कुल घोटाले में एक हजार से अधिक फर्जी प्रमाण पत्र शामिल हो सकते हैं। कार्यप्रणाली: अनियमितताओं में गैर-मौजूद अस्पतालों के माध्यम से जन्म पंजीकरण दिखाना शामिल था, जो अधिकारियों, एजेंटों और फर्जी दस्तावेज प्राप्त करने वाले व्यक्तियों के बीच सांठगांठ का सुझाव देता है। Kirit Somaiya 

• आगे की कार्रवाई: डॉ. फंडे के निलंबन के अलावा, बीएमसी एक अन्य स्वास्थ्य अधिकारी और दो सहायकों के निलंबन की प्रक्रिया शुरू कर रही है। इस मामले से संबंधित 6 नवंबर, 2025 को देवनार पुलिस स्टेशन द्वारा एक प्राथमिकी दर्ज की जानी थी। व्यापक जांच: महाराष्ट्र सरकार ने व्यापक विलंबित जन्म पंजीकरण Birth Certificate घोटाले की जांच के लिए एक विशेष जांच दल (एसआईटी) का गठन किया है
